Founder's Story
Why We Opened The Whitening Lab
For years, long before The Whitening Lab was ever a plan, Courtney and I heard the same question almost every day.
It came from patients in the chair, from friends at dinner, from people we'd only just met. "How do you keep your teeth looking so bright?" The wording changed a little each time. The feeling behind it never did. And the more we heard it, the more we realized it was pointing at something bigger than teeth.
We opened The Whitening Lab because that one question kept exposing a gap — the space between what people hoped their smile could be and what they were actually able to find. Nobody was dedicated to closing it. So we decided to be.
The question behind the question
Almost no one asked us about shade guides or peroxide percentages. They asked because they'd started covering their mouth in photos. Because they'd caught themselves smiling with their lips closed. Because somewhere along the way, they'd quietly decided their smile was something to manage rather than show.
That's when it clicked for us. This was never really about white teeth. It was about not wanting to hide. Confidence was the thing people were missing, and whitening was just the word they had for it.
Maintenance and starting over aren't the same job
Let's be clear: we believe in at-home care. We believe in it so much that years later we built our own retail line designed specifically for it. But at-home products are made to maintain a result, not to undo a decade of history.
Most of the people we met were carrying years of coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and ordinary life in their smiles. Then they'd reach for a touch-up tool and quietly blame themselves when it didn't deliver.
Here's the truth we kept running into: the product wasn't failing them, and neither were they. They were using a maintenance tool for a starting-over problem, with no one there to explain the difference.
Why we made smiles the only thing we do
I'd spent more than two decades in dentistry by then, including years running a dental lab, and it taught me something simple. When you do one thing exclusively, you start to see what everyone else overlooks.
A good general practice does dozens of things well. But none of them are built to sit with you and map out your whitening, specifically, the way it deserves. We wanted a place that did exactly that and nothing else.
Focus is what makes real customization possible. You can't tailor something you only do now and then.
We evaluate first, then we treat
Every smile starts somewhere different. A different shade, a different level of sensitivity, a different history, a different goal. So that's where we begin — with you, not with a one-size plan pulled off a shelf.
And we treat the education as seriously as the appointment. We'd genuinely rather you walk out understanding your own teeth than simply booked for the next thing. The honest read on where your smile actually stands is half the value of being here.
Foundation first, then maintenance
An in-studio experience helps create the foundation. At-home care helps protect it. We offer both because the best results come from both working together, not from picking a side.
That's also why we've never been interested in selling anyone the maximum of anything. We're interested in the combination that actually holds, for your teeth and your life.
The takeaway
If I had to put the whole reason on a single line, it's this: we never set out to sell a product or fill an appointment book. We set out to help people feel confident enough to stop hiding their smile. Everything we do, in the studio and at home, still answers to that.
And it all still comes back to the one question we heard every single day: "How do you keep your teeth looking so bright?" If you've ever quietly wondered the same thing about your own smile, that's exactly what we're here for. Come see us at either of our Maine locations in Gray or Alfred— we'll start with you.
